Dance Workshop Series

Description

Upper level dancers will love these extended dance workshops! Students will focus on perfecting skills, be introduced to new dance styles and techniquess, and learn some history of dance. Each week offers a new dance style to challenge students and broaden their dance knowledge. Students can sign up for single workshops throughout the session or save by signing up for multiple workshops. For attire see requirements for each style in the Dance Attire Section.

Class Descriptions

  • Tap: Taught by Miss Meg!
    • Miss Meg has taught with DJT Dance since the fall of 2016. She has taught all levels of ballet, jazz, tap, and poms. She also assists with our tumbling classes. Miss Meg's passion for dance is strong and she strives to help dancers be the best they can be!
      • Whether you’re a beginner or experienced performer, we have a fun & challenging tap dance experience just right for you. Miss Meg loves Tap dance because you get to become a musician while dancing and making music with your feet! 

        This workshop focuses on developing students coordination, sense of time,rhythm and musicality, and basic tap dancing vocabulary. Students will participate in fun group activities and use cool props! 

        Be ready to try exciting tap skills, dance to fun music, and learn a short tap routine! Please bring your tap shoes with socks, a water bottle and a smile! 

  • Modern/Lyrical: Taught by Miss Meg!
    • Miss Meg grew a strong passion for Lyrical and Modern dance when she was first Introduced to it. Modern dance was her main focus during her four years of dance in college. She is thrilled to have the chance to pass on her love and experience of these dance styles. 
      • Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz techniques. This style challenges dancers to use motion to interpret music and express emotion. A lyrical dancer's movements attempt to show the meaning of the music. Modern is a free, expressive style of dancing. students will learn the movements that are the foundation for modern dance. Movements such as contractions, spirals, basic floor work, and concepts of space, time and force. They will also work on core strength and flexibility in a fun and encouraging environment. Students will also have an opportunity to open up and discover their creativity through improvisational dance. Please bring form fitting clothes that are easy to move in, bare feet, ballet shoes, or paws, and a water bottle! 
  • Jazz: Taught by Miss Alicia! 
    • Miss Alicia has been with DJT Dance since the summer of 2014. She has taught ballet, jazz, lyrical and poms throughout her time here. She attended Augustana College where she was a part of the Dance Team, the Vikettes, and a member of the Augustana Dance Company. Miss Alicia's positive energy and caring for her students shines through in her teaching. She is always striving to help students challenge themselves in their dancing.
      • Throughout the course of the workshop, students can expect to engage in style specific warm ups, combinations, and learn and clean a short choreographed piece. Skills that will be focused on include musicality, turns, and jumps. Each student will have a chance to contribute to the choreographed piece as well. Dancers should come already stretched, wearing jazz shoes and pants that are not loose. Please bring a water bottle and a positive attitude!
  • Ballet/Pre-Pointe: Taught by Miss Jenny! 
    • Miss Jenny has taught with DJT Dance since the fall of 2015. She has taught ballet, tap, jazz, and lyrical. In the winter of 2017 she took on the roll of Dance Coordinator for DJT. She has loved getting to know all DJT Dance students and families and looks forward to growing the program in the years to come. Miss Jenny began dancing at age 8 years old and has not stopped since! She was a member of the Orchesis Dance Company at the University of Northern Iowa all four years of college. She studied mainly ballet and modern dance in her time there. Her love and appreciation for all styles of dance lives on and she is so happy to pass it on to future generations. 
      • Students work to master the ballet technique, discipline, and dance expression. This class will work to build the muscles needed to perform leaps, turns, and intricate combinations. Class will begin with a stretch and warm up at the barre. Dancers will learn exercises to stretch and strengthen the leg, feet, and ankles for safe dancing. Dancers will work on proper executions of turns, leaps, and intermediate to advanced skills. All combinations and exercises can be catered to properly challenge each dancer's skill level. Dancers will learn a short choreographed piece that will be shown to parents at the end of the workshop. Please be in proper ballet attire, bring a water bottle, and your excitement to learn! 
  • Poms: Taught by Miss Alicia!
    • In her strongest style, Miss Alicia is back teaching our Poms Workshop! Miss Alicia teaches our highest level Poms class at DJT Dance and is excited to expand dancers' knowledge of the style and technique.
      • Throughout the course of the workshop, students can expect to engage in style specific warm ups, combinations, and learn and clean a short choreographed piece. Skills that will be focused on include isolations, leaps, turns, ripples, and group work. Each student will have a chance to contribute to the choreographed piece as well. Dancers should come already stretched, wearing jazz shoes or gym shoes and pants that are not loose. Please bring a water bottle and a positive attitude!
  • Hip Hop: Taught by Guest Artist, Miss Alex!
    • Miss Alex taught with DJT Dance from Fall 2015-Spring 2017 where she taught tap, jazz, hip hop, and ballet classes. Currently she is at the University of Iowa working on her Doctorate in Audiology. We are happy to have her back teaching the Hip Hop Workshop! She has been dancing hip hop since she was 11 years old an began competing in the style when she was 14. She continued her growth in Hip Hop through her high school and college dance teams as well as workshops and classes in Chicago. She has taught Hip Hop for 8 years and is excited to be back in the DJT Dance Studio!
      • This workshop will focus on exploring the different sub-genres of hip hop including jazz-hop, and lyrical hip hop, while incorporating a traditional hip hop foundation including tutting, vogueing, footwork, and stalls, so get ready to work it out! Be ready for fun warm-ups, challenging combinations, "gravity defying" stunts, and an aerobic workout! Please bring a water bottle, wear pants or knee pads, and sneakers.
