About the Collaboration
“We are bringing together two of the Quad Cities longest lasting and most beloved companies,” said Daniel Sheridan, Artistic Director of Junior Theatre. “Come has been here for nearly 30 years and DJT for nearly 70. We are excited to team up and launch an all new show for kids.”
In May, CSz said goodbye to its home at The Establishment (formerly the Rocket Theatre) in downtown Rock Island. The company moved into the space eight years ago after parting ways with Circa 21’s Speakeasy venue. For a variety of reasons CSz decided to close the doors at The Establishment and take their show into the community at large.
“We were locked into a venue on one side of the river and realized needed to reach back into the community as a whole,” said Patrick Adamson, owner and performer for CSz. “This new phase of CSz’s life allows us to go to venues throughout the Quad Cities and try new shows for new audiences.”
ComedySportz provides an improvisation comedy show, meaning everything is made up on the spot in front of the audience from their suggestions. The all new ‘ComedySportz For Kids’ show will feature more games, more volunteers, more audience suggestions, no intermission and gear the show even more towards kids.
“Adults will have fun too,” added Sheridan. “The beautiful thing about improv is it all about great storytelling. CSz has always held the highest standards of clean, family fun comedy. This will allow us to introduce this theatrical art form to even more DJT students and parents.”
Sheridan himself grew up doing Junior Theatre. When he was 16, he auditioned for CSz and was among an elite group to begin training. After 10 months of training, he was offered a job and worked for CSz as a professional performer throughout his years at Saint Ambrose University from 2000 – 2005.
“I had the chance to come back to Junior Theatre during college and teach improv and other classes in the summer,” said Sheridan. “CSz had a huge influence on developing my professional and theatrical journey.”
This fall, Adamson will be leading all the improvisation classes at Junior Theatre, which are offered for kids ages 7-18. Classes start September 7 and registration is open at the Junior Theatre website.
“I cannot wait to be in the classroom, spending time training young students,” said Adamson. “DJT is known to be top notch at supporting staff. This means higher quality instruction because I can really focus all my energy on my students.”
Besides the new ‘ComedySportz For Kids’ show at Junior Theatre, regular ComedySportz shows can be seen at the Spotlight Theatre (Moline, IL) and at One Voice QC (Davenport, IA) inside Northpark Mall. The most up-to-date info can be found on the CSz Quad Cities Facebook page.
