Meet the Staff Series: Ashley Mills Becher
Meet Ashley Mills Becher!
Ashley is proud to teach both theatre and dance at DJT! We asked her a series of questions ranging from silly to serious in order to get to know her a little better. The informal interview follows:
When did you first discover your passion for theatre? Was there one specific moment you can recall?
I was 4, and saw my sister perform as one of the kids in Carousel at BHS. I was enamored with everything; the pre-show rituals, the costumes, make-up, lights, music! It was the first live show I'd experienced, and it was love at first sight.
Miss Dorothy in Thoroughly Modern Millie
What about a dream role?
Dot in Sunday in the Park With George
How do you spend your free time?
I'm an extrovert, I recharge spending time with, and having discussions with others. I want to know people's stories, and what makes them tick. My husband and I also love good (and bad) TV.
What song always puts you in a good mood?
Carousel Waltz from Carousel, Bring Me to Light from Violet, and anything Meghan Trainor ;)
Shows I would see again and again: Rabbit Hole with Cynthia Nixon and Tyne Daly, 110 in the Shade with Audra McDonald, the most recent revival of Hello, Dolly! (I saw it 3 times- twice with Bette and once with Bernadette), anything with Sutton Foster, the 2008 revival of Sunday in the Park With George.....and one of my all time favorite shows is Ragtime
What's the best thing you've seen on stage recently?
Once on this Island on Broadway. It was the kind of show that gets all your emotions, and also makes you excited and inspired to create!
Favorite playwrights or choreographers?
Playwrights: David Lindsay-Abaire, Sarah Ruhl, Arthur Miller (I know, I know), and now since Mean Girls, I can say Tina Fey! Choreographers: Casey Nicholaw, Rob Ashford, Twyla Tharp, Justin Peck
What quote do you live by?
"Snap, Crackle, Pop" and "The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself!"
Who are your heroes?
Jeanine Tesori, Sutton Foster, Bobby and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Tina Fey
What is one thing you wish you had known when you were younger?
The world is SO big, and there are so many things you don't know about yet. Don't plan the rest of your life, because that will limit you. Instead be open, and look for twists and turns! Embrace the unknown!
What is your favorite thing about Junior Theatre?
The community! Excellent staff and families!
What do you love most about teaching children's theatre/dance?
The challenge! It is hard! But with great risk, comes great reward, and when there's a breakthrough, or you see growth in a kid, it's totally worth it!
What is on your bucket list?
Visit every country.
How do you find inspiration?
Keeping my eyes wide open! Consume as much as I can, and then give myself time to reflect.
What was the best piece of advice you've ever received?
Pursue your bliss!
What was your favorite class in school?
High School: AP English with Mrs. Sherman; College: Acting for Singers
What's your favorite food?
If you had one superpower, what would it be?
Make people tell the truth. I think deception is the root of so many evils!
To be or not to be?
Definitely to BE!
