Meet the Staff Series: Ashley Coffin
Meet Ashley Coffin!
Ashley is one of our phenomenal dance instructors at DJT Dance! We asked her a series of questions ranging from silly to serious in order to get to know her a little better. The informal interview follows:
When did you first discover your passion for theatre? Was there one specific moment you can recall?
I can't remember a time where dance wasn't in my life. I started dancing at age three and my passion just grew from there! In 8th grade I received the roll of Snow Queen in The Nutcracker and I think it was that year when I realized how strong my passion for ballet and dance was. From that moment on I knew I wanted to pursue dance as a career in my future.
My favorite role I have performed is a demon in the ballet/opera 'Carmina Burana'. The role was very demanding with energy and enthusiasm. I loved portraying this interesting character on stage-plus the music is phenomenal to dance too!!
What about a dream role?
I don't have a specific dream role at the moment, however I would love the chance to be involved in a production of 'Swan Lake', or dance a Jiri Kylian (choreographer) piece.
How do you spend your free time?
When I am not in the studio dancing or teaching I love to spend time outdoors! I consider myself an adventurous person, whether it is simple walks along the river, or the chance to escape to the mountains for some hiking or skiing.
What song always puts you in a good mood?
My taste of songs fluctuates with my mood and daily schedule-however some of my go to artists are John Mayer, Lana Del Rey, Shawn Mendes, Panic at the Disco, The Chainsmokers, and Jonas Blue.
One of my all time favorite musicals that I have seen is The Drowsy Chaperone followed by The Lion King.
What's the best thing you've seen on stage recently?
The best thing I have seen on stage recently is the ballet 'La Fille mal gardee" performed by the Pairs Opera Ballet at the Palais Garnier in Paris, France!! I was like a little kid in a candy store :)
There are so many to chose from! Some of my favorite choreographers are Jiri Kylian, Alexander Ekman, and Ashton Tudor.
What quote do you live by?
What is your favorite thing about DJT Dance?
My favorite thing about DJT Dance is the positive and creative environment established to help students explore the importance of art and develop a creative passion.
What do you love most about teaching children's dance?
I love teaching the students of DJT Dance because I am able to share my passion and love of dance to the next generation. Not only am I teaching the students, but the students teach me more each and everyday. That I am grateful for!
What is on your bucket list?
I love to travel and go on adventures! That being send, traveling to Hawaii and Switzerland is at the top of my bucket list.
How do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in the daily people around me! Opening my mind to their ideas and outlook on life.
What was the best piece of advice you've ever received?
It's not about out performing others, it is about improving upon yourself. My Dad taught me that. I don't measure myself to other people, I measure myself to myself and do the best I can.
What was your favorite class in school?
Growing up my favorite class in school was math. I have a very black and white mathematical brain-with a little bit of artistic creativity thrown in the mix!
