CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Now in our 58th year, Junior Theatre is proud to continue offering the very best in theatrical training and fun. Our classes develop each child’s ability to speak well in any situation, express imaginatively, have fun, and dream big. We put the imagination to work, challenging creativity and causing it to rise to new heights. At Davenport Junior Theatre, we know that investing in our youth is the surest way to invest in our future.

Creative Theatre Fun
Ages 3-4 : $75
Fun! Imagination! Game-Play!  This class uses creative role-play, mime, imaginary play, basic improvisational exercises, movement, crafts, and games to develop a healthy and physical imagination.  This class will develop your child’s confidence in any social setting, as they get ready to enter school.  The class culminates in a small performance on our stage during the 10th week.

Acting I
Ages 5-6 / 7-9 / 10-12 : $80
Offering something new and dynamic each class session, Acting I will develop your child’s social and speaking skills using the tool of theatre. Best of all, it is great fun!  The class covers basic theatre terminology, stage directions, improvisation, and vocal & physical skill development.  For the younger student, the class emphasizes concentration, group interaction, and basic reading skills with little take-home memorization.  Older students, while gaining the same skills, will be challenged to look more in-depth at scripts, develop memorization technique, and learn about theatre history.  For both younger and older students, the class culminates in a small performance of their own play on the Nighswander stage during the 10th week..  This class can be taken multiple times, as new friends, games, and scripts will surround your child’s imagination.

Acting II
Teacher Recommended & Age 8+ : $85
Building on what students learned in Acting I, this class deepens the imagination and technique of storytelling.  The focus is on character development.  New skills will be developed in creating the physical life of a character.  Study will be done on how actors research and prepare for a role.  The class may use a number of study tools (i.e. monologues, scene-work, short plays, etc).  Students will have some take home research and memorization.  The class will perform on our stage in the 10th week.

Students will be recommended to Acting II, upon mastering the skills learnned in Acting I. Students develop these skills at different rates.

Teen Acting
Ages 13+ : $85
Intended for students of all experience levels, Teen Acting will bring you together with fellow peers from all over the Quad-Cities.  Whether you are a first time actor or experienced veteran, this class will be a challenge.  The curriculum is adapted to each students' experience level.  Teen Acting is a great way to socialize and meet other teens in the theatrical circuit around town, while continuing to develop imagination, performance skills, and theatrical technique.  Teen Acting is different each time and can be taken again and again.  The class is led by local actress Kim Furness. Kim has worked in Chicago, LA, and now runs her own theatre company, The Curtainbox Theatre Company. She is also the Davenport Junior Theatre Board President.  The class culminates in a small performance on our stage during the 10th week.

Theatre Improv
Ages 8-12 : $80
Ever see ComedySportz or Whose Line is it Anyway?  Back by popular demand, Theatre improv will have you thinking on the spot in no time.  This course is a collection of theatre games and exercises that provide students the tools to think quickly and creatively.  You will be lead by a top area professional improv performer from ComedySportz, Jeff De Leon!  The class culminates in a final performance on our stage during the showcase week.

Beginning Broadway
Ages 8+ : $90
Ever wonder what it might be like to be in a Broadway Musical?  Now is your time to find out!  Known at the “Triple Threat” in theatre, learn what it takes to dance, sing, and act all at the same time.  No one will be forced to sing a solo, as this class is about building your confidence on the stage. However, solos may be available if requested.  The work culminates in a small performance of 2-3 numbers on the Nighswander Theatre stage during our 10th week.

Vocal Performance
Age 8+ : $90
Want to concentrate on singing in a Broadway Musical?  Vocal performance will take a closer look at vocal music skills.  With a smaller group than the Beginning Broadway course, participants will work on breathing exercises, singing as part of an ensemble, matching pitch and tone, and learning the basics to read music.  Best of all, you’ll be working with a pianist right there in the classroom!  This class is bound to give you more confidence when it comes to singing onstage.  The class culminates in a performance of 2 – 3 numbers in our theatre during the 10th week.

Stagecraft
Age 12+ : $90
What does it take to put up a production?  How do you run lights, design sound, build a set, or work as a crewmember?  Stagecraft is the jumping off point into the world of technical theatre.  In this class you’ll touch upon all the basics that go into putting up a play.  You will receive actual hands on experience with equipment in a real theatre.  Your work will be seen in our Class Showcases and in a Showcase of your own on your final day of class during our 10th week. Once your interest is peaked, maybe you’d like to explore further in a specialized area by volunteering on a Mainstage Production!
